Applause for new live music event

October 20, 2009

The success of ECG’s first live music night held at the McMillan campus at Warragul recently has sealed it as a monthly event.
Seventeen local musicians and singers performed before an audience of 70 people with a highlight of the night an open jam session where performers played together unrehearsed adding a surprise element to the show.
Organiser ECG Manager Des Hughes said the diversity and ages of the artists and the different styles of music performed from Irish, African, folk, jazz, Spanish and flamenco, original and alternative was a real strength of the night.
“The night was an opportunity for ‘Free City’ a young band of four 15 year olds to showcase their talent to the community as well as hear the stunning vocals of Warragul’s Katie Clements supported on guitar by husband David.
“We had a number of very experienced artists including AlanTatlow’s band with musicians David Vaskuss, Norm Evans and John Curtis. Samuel Pakoti moved the audience with his original ballads, while Paddy O’Dowd performed magic on saxophone, clarinet and the tin whistle. Roger and Adele Terrill and Peter and Hedy Kirkbride entertained on a variety of bongos and African drums, while David Steele joined in on saxophone for a stunning finale that brought together all musicians to jam together.”
Mr Hughes said the night had been organised to provide a platform for local musicians and singers to perform before an audience, network, and work with other artists to hone their skills.
“One of the drummers performing was offered a place in a band as result of the evening and that opportunity of bringing artists together is what this night is all about.
Expressions of interest are being taken for performers with the next music night to be held on Friday November 27.
“The night is to open to the community to attend and enjoy the live music with byo nibbles and drinks and a small cover charge.
“We also encourage operators of local venues to attend as many of the artists are available for work and exceptionally talented ”
